The Health Council


The purpose of the Health Council is to raise the awareness the church community in holistic concepts of health and the relationship between faith and health. To achieve this, the council develops the programs and activities of the health and healing ministry. These include regular "Health and Wellness" events on topics relevant to the congregation and community. Special services are planned at Christmas, for those who find Christmas a difficult time and for the Celebration of the Feast of St. Luke. An important function of the council is to support the work of the parish nurse.

This ministry serves those who see the Cathedral as their primary place of worship, those who look to the Cathedral for help in times of need and difficulty and our community outreach programs.   The church is a unique setting for health promotion, education, and disease prevention. The role of the parish nurse is to work towards an intentional health and healing ministry in the church. As a member of the ministerial team, her goal is to promote the church as a community health place. This is achieved by connecting the healing resources of our faith and church with the professional knowledge and skills of a nurse. True health and wholeness comes with the integration of the physiological, psychological, sociological dimension with spirituality. This connection of health and faith finds its roots in the nursing profession itself and the history of the church.

Earth Day will be celebrated throughout the Diocese of Toronto on Sunday, April 18. St. James' Cathedral will recognize the day in the liturgy and through special displays.

The Parish Nurse


Gloria Wiebe, R.N. established the Parish Nursing Ministry at the Cathedral in 1998. Raised in Abbotsford B.C., Gloria graduated from the Vancouver General Hospital School of Nursing. She has also studied Theology, Bible, Church History and Music at the Mennonite Brethren Bible College in Winnipeg and in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Woodsworth College, University of Toronto. She completed Parish Nursing Preparation Courses at McMaster Divinity College and Interchurch Health Ministries in Oshawa. Areas of nursing practice are in Paediatrics, General Surgery and Community Nursing with the Victorian Order of Nurses in Winnipeg and Toronto. Professional Associations are with the College of Nurses of Ontario, Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, and the Canadian Association for Parish Nursing Ministry. She is president of the Parish Nursing Interest Group (PNIG), a special interest group of the Registered Nurses of Ontario (RNAO).  She is married, lives in Toronto and has one son.  Contact: (416) 364-7865 x230 or Email
